Spot the Comet in Central NY’s Sky Wednesday Night

Wednesday, July 15, 2020 (UTICA) – With mainly clear skies in the forecast, Wednesday night offers the best chance to spot Comet C/2020 F3 NEOWISE from Central New York.

The ideal time for viewing is around 1-2 hours after sunset (9:40-10:40 p.m.). Allow time for your eyes to adjust to the darkness (no looking at your phone!) for at least 10 minutes. Look northwest, below the Big Dipper. Neowise should be about 7° above the horizon.

NEOWISE, an acronym for Near-Earth Object Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer, was the name of the NASA satellite that discovered the comet back on March 27th. The recently discovered comet is will continue to put on a show in our night sky through the end of July. After that, the comet will not be seen again for almost 7,000 years.
