May temperatures were a roller coaster of ups and downs. For the first half of the month, we were abnormally colder as 8 days experienced temperatures 5 or more degrees below average. On May 8th, we were 17 degrees below normal! We had just a few seasonable days before going into an abnormally warmer period with 9 days experiencing temperatures 5 or more degrees above average.
Though what exactly is the average temperature for May? Well, it progresses from the low 60’s at the start of the month to low 70’s at the end of the month. For example, the average high temperature for May 1st is 63 degrees, for May 2nd it’s 64 degrees, May 4th it’s 65 etc. all the way up to the last day of May which experiences an average high temperature of 73 degrees.
Overlooking the entire month of May, 2021, we had a total of 12 days with a 5 or more degree difference below normal, 8 days that were within 5 degrees of our average, and 10 days with a 5 or more degree difference above normal. Although we had more colder days in May, we’re expected to see a different trend going into June. Models are suggesting that much of the north east will have a warmer than normal start to June.
