Plastic film recycling challenge for schools

The Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority is sponsoring the 2019 Plastic film Recycling Challenge for local schools. The program is designed to educate children and the community on how to properly dispose of plastic bags and other plastic films that cannot be recycled in curbside pick-ups.

Last year we had 19 schools participated and together they were able to recycle over 6,000 pounds of plastic film that they collected which translates to about 500,000 plastic grocery bags. Registration is open until November 1st and the challenge will begin November 15th. Each participating will school will have six weeks to gather as many plastic bags and film products as possible. One elementary school and one middle-high school will be selected for a special prize.
