ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY-TV) – Oneida County Sheriff Robert Maciol is advising residents to be aware of a phone scam involving the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office. There have been several calls using names of the sheriff’s office members regarding payment of fines, collection of money in lieu of arrest or claims the victim owes money for these offenses and must issue payment via mobile bank transfer, gift card or pre-paid debit card. we spoke with sheriff Robert Maciol about what to do if you receive one of these calls.
“stop for a second take a breath collect your thoughts and pay attention to what they’re telling you because obviously if anything seems out of the ordinary then it probably is…just abruptly end those calls and certainly lastly we want people to notify law enforcement because if we could get lucky one of these days and make an arrest it will certainly help stop these things,” said Maciol.
If you or a loved one has been the recent victim of a scam, contact the sheriff’s office at 315-736-0141 to make a report.
