VVS baseball drops heartbreaker to Westhill

VVS baseball comes so close yet so far from advancing to the Section III Class B Finals.

The Red Devils entered the top of the seventh inning leading Westhill 7-5, only to see the Warriors rally for four runs off Blake VanDreason in an eventual 9-7 victory and a berth in Sunday’s title game.

VVS appeared to be in control early, leading 4-1 after four.  Westhill scored two in the fifth to make it a one run game and then added two more in the sixth to take a 5-4 lead.

VanDreason hit a two-run triple in the sixth to put the Red Devils back in front 6-5.  He would come across to score later in the inning to extend the lead to 7-5.

In the seventh, VanDreason thought he had the second out of the inning until Alex Kipp mishandled a throw to second on a force play.

Westhill would go on to load the bases and tie the game on a Walker Blossey two-run single.  A wild-pitch followed to put the Warriors in front for good.

VVS finishes the year with an overall record of 13-5, while Westhill will play for a sectional title on Sunday at 12pm at Onondaga Community College.

Here are other scores from Friday:

Whitesboro 7 CBA 3
