CARY, N.C. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – Newtown Pride FC, one of two teams in The Soccer Tournament that included current UCFC players, lost their first contest of group play to the other side that homed men in blue, Kingdom FC, but after that ran through the tournament, not allowing a competitor to score more than one goal in a game and winning six in row on route to the TST Championship and $1,000,000 to be split between the roster.
Stefan Mijatovic, Issak Somow and Quenton Swift all contributed to the teams’ success, and used their familiarity with the small field size, rolling substitutions and other modified 7-on-7 rules to carry a team composed mostly of Major Arena Soccer League players past other squads that included Premier League, Bundesliga, and World Cup winners along with former USMNT, USWNT, and other international stars.
Somow, a Proctor grad, did his part on the offensive end, totaling three points including the game-winning Target Score Time goal that gave them the victory over the DMV Diplomats in the elimination Round of 16, while Swift and Mijatovic worked mainly on the backend, both wearing the captain’s armband at points through the team’s six games.
