UTICA, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – Utica University will head into the 2022-23 school year with more than just a new name, hiring new faces to head its’ softball and men’s lacrosse programs.
Rinae Olsen, Utica class of 2009, returns to the school after spending 9 years as a coach in the Liberty League. Olsen assisted at Ithaca College, where the Bombers made five NCAA tournament appearances in her six years there, and then taking the head coaching position at Skidmore College. In her three years as head coach the program did not have a losing record, going 40-28 overall.
And the new coach of the UU men’s lacrosse program is Lelan Rogers. Rogers comes to Utica with over 30 years of lacrosse coaching experience, most recently as the defensive coordinator at Syracuse University, a position he held for 14 years. In his time at Syracuse the Orange won back to back national titles in 2008 and 2009 an had a top five defense in the country for three straight years, including the number defense in 2010. Rogers was also the head coach at SUNY Cortland prior to being hired at SU, leading the Red Dragons to five NCAA tournament births and a semifinal appearance in 2003. He takes over a Utica team that went 6-9 overall last season after starting 6-4 and losing their final five games.
