LAKELAND, FL (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – Gordy Gurson scored the game winning goal with just five minutes left in overtime to lead Utica City FC over the Florida Tropics, 4-3 on Sunday, March 26.
Taylor Walter Bond also scored a hat trick for Utica City (12-10-1), including the game-tying goal just three minutes into the third quarter. That goal came just 40 seconds after Florida’s JP Reyes scored a goal that gave the Tropics (10-7-5) a 3-2 lead.
Four different Utica City players also picked up assists, while Andrew Coughlin saved 25 shots. Coughlin also picked up his 12th win of the season, good enough for third-most in the league.
Thiago Freitas and Breno Oliveira picked up the other goals for the Tropics.
With the win, Utica City FC clinched a spot in the Ron Newman Cup playoffs, but their game on Saturday, April 1 against Baltimore still carries significance. Currently, the Kansas City Comets — their playoff opponent no matter what happens on Saturday – sit just one point behind Utica in the standings. Utica City will host a playoff game at the Adirondack Bank Center with a win on Friday.
