Sherrill Post comes out on top in the battle of unbeatens.
Entering Wednesday, Sherrill Post and Whitestown Post were the only two undefeated teams left in District 5 Legion Baseball, and Sherrill hangs on for the 7-4 win in the two teams’ first head-to-head matchup of the season.
Griffin Baur and Connor VanDreason pitched scoreless baseball through three innings, until Sherrill broke through with a run in the top of the fourth to take a 1-0 lead.
Sherrill added to their lead in the fifth. With the bases loaded, Dylan Shlotzhauer drove in Davey Moffett on a sac-fly to give Sherrill a 2-run advantage.
Later, Zack Nell made it 3-0 with a towering double that landed over the head of Whitestown left fielder Joe Ruggiero. They’d add another run in the in the sixth to take a 4-0 lead.
Whitestown cut the deficit to 4-1 in the bottom of the sixth and were hoping to make it 4-2 when Ryan McAndrew was thrown out at the plate on a controversial call.
McAndrew advanced to third on an error by Sherrill second baseman Dylan Shlotzhauer and tried to score after the throw to third went by the third baseman, but was called out.
Sherrill put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh scoring three more runs. The big blow came when Nate Palmer lined a single to right field that went by Whitestown right fielder David Camerota allowing two runs to score.
Matt Parkinson drove in three with a bases clearing double in the bottom of the seventh to make the score 7-4, but it was too little to late.
With the win, Sherrill Post improves to 8-0, while Whitestown falls to 7-1.
