The preseason opener for the SU men’s basketball team got off to a slow start Tuesday night.

After six minutes of action, Jim Boeheim found his guys trailing Division-II school Indiana University of Pennsylvania 20-5.

Soon though, order was restored as the Orange closed out the first half on a 20-4 run and eventually went on to beat the Crimson Hawks 83-65.

Highly-touted freshman Tyus Battle came off the bench to provide a spark.

Battle scored 13 of his game-high 16 points in the first half.

He finished the game 6-for-10 from the field and 4-for-5 from three-point range.

Tyler Roberson was next in line with 14 points and seven rebounds. Tyler Lydon chipped in with a double-double as he finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Frank Howard was the only other Syracuse player to score in double figures.  Howard, who started the game at point guard, dropped in 10 points in 20 minutes of action.

Colorado State-transfer John Gillon led the team in assists with nine.  The other fifth-year grad transfer, Andrew White, struggled a little bit with his shooting.

White made just two of his nine attempts and settled for eight points.

SU will play one more preseason game, next Tuesday inside the Dome against Le Moyne.

The regular season opener is set for Friday, Nov. 11 against Colgate.
