HILTON, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — The Empire 8 has named their conference players of the week for the past week on Monday, September 25, and while neither Utica University nor Hartwick College made the short list, two local players have earned honors for the week.

Vernon-Verona-Sherrill graduate Jake Pawlika earned Men’s Soccer co-Offensive Player of the Week for the second straight week. The junior continued his streak of eight straight games with a goal, scored one goal in a 2-0 win over SUNY Oswego. He then followed that up with the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Hartwick. Pawlicka is just one of two players in the country that has scored in every game this season.

Pawlicka has four game-winning goals this season, helping the Golden Flyers to a 7-0-1 start to the season. He is also a perfect four-for-four on penalty kicks this season.

On the field hockey field, former RFA standout Jace Hunzinger earned Offensive Player of the Week honors for the Houghton Highlanders. Hunzinger scored a goal and two assists in both games she played in the past week, in an 11-0 win over Keuka and a 6-0 win over Utica. Hunzinger currently has 14 assists this season, earning her the Empire 8 career record for assists, giving her 44 in just 45 career games.

The junior also has played all 60 minutes in her last seven games, only missing 16 minutes of play all season while leading the Highlanders to a 7-1 record this season.
