UTICA, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – Proctor Senior Tamiah Washington signed her letter of intent to run track at division one Texas Tech next year. She says she chose Texas tech because she felt comfortable there and is excited about the quality of their track and field program that she’ll get to play for.
Washington is nationally ranked as a high school student and recently broke the section three indoor track long jump record. Washington said that her hard work and support from others have helped her get to this point.
“It’s great to know like, the work that I’ve put into is finally paying off and it means something to other people, not just me. It’s really good to me because the elementary kids or the middle school kids, they have someone to look up to and they know the area that we live in, there’s not a lot of people who go to big schools like that or have this much success in athletics and things like that. So, it’s good that I’m there to inspire them and they can look up to me and know that if I can do it, they can do it too. I wouldn’t be where I am today without everyone’s support, my families support, and my teammates, my coaches especially, and it means a lot to me.” – Proctor Senior Tamiah Washington
Both of Washington’s parents also hold track and field records at Proctor, Alphonso Washington from the Class of 1997, and Naida Ohcanohvik from the Class of 2000.
