Holland Patent ‘ready’ to snap sectional title drought

Herkimer has a chance to win their first sectional title since 1989 on Saturday afternoon at the Carrier Dome.

“It’s going to take all we got,” senior Jason Haas said.  “But we’re ready.”

The Golden Knights enter their game against General Brown a perfect 9-0, having already won the program’s first league title in 21 years.

“The community is definitely surrounding us with a lot of support,” DJ Harter said.  “It’s not everyday you get to play in the Carrier Dome.  We’re excited for the opportunity to fulfill our goals.”

Head coach Brian Briggs played on that 1989 title winning team, and he’s making sure to pull out all the stops to ensure Holland Patent will come out on top.

“(I had) my old coach Dave Langone come to practice,” Briggs said.  “He spoke to the kids and said it’s one thing if you win a Section III title, but it’s another thing if you lose a Section III title, so the biggest thing to do is focus and be prepared to win.”

The Golden Knights played the Lions last season and lost 54-21.

“It was our homecoming,” Harter said.  “They came in and embarrassed us on our home field, but last year’s team and this year’s team are totally different.”

Holland Patent is hoping that rings true on Saturday afternoon.

“It would mean the world honestly,” Haas said.  “Field hockey and soccer won.  We just need to come through with our win now.”

A victory would be a full-circle moment for Harter.  His father played in the Carrier Dome three times as a member of the Golden Knights in the 1980s, but never won a sectional title.

“(My dad) hasn’t seen (Holland Patent win) in awhile,” Harter said.  “He’s definitely proud to see his own son do what he did and play on the Carrier Dome turf.”

Kickoff is set for noon.
