VERONA, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – After not being able to complete its season in 2022, the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill boys’ lacrosse program teamed up with its Route 5 Rival, Oneida, to field a team in 2023, but weren’t able to turn that combination into a win in their first game. They fell by a final score of 18-2 to the Fulton Red Raiders at Sheveron Stadium at Vernon-Verona-Sherrill High School.
It took Fulton just 16 seconds to break the scoring open, taking possession on the opening faceoff and breaking all the way through VVS’ defensive zone. The Red Raiders scored twice in the first 1:03, had their third goal 28 seconds later and made their lead four 2:11 into the game before the Red Devils scored their only goal of the first half with 9:01 left in the first quarter. The game was 17-1 at halftime before both teams settled into cruise control for the second half, finishing with the aforementioned 18-2 final score.
