Turnovers doomed Herkimer in Friday’s Section III Class D title game.
Senior quarterback James Aiello threw four interceptions in the Magicians’ 20-12 loss to Onondaga at the Carrier Dome.
Herkimer got on the board first in the second quarter on a 3-yard touchdown run by Wyatt Renshaw. Aiello was picked off later in the quarter, which set up a Jason Holbrook touchdown to give the Tigers an 8-6 lead.
Matt Delaney extended the lead to 14-6 with a touchdown early in the third. In the fourth with Herkimer looking to tie it, Holbrook came through with a pick-six as Onondaga took a 20-6 lead.
The Magicians struck right back on a Renshaw 67-yard touchdown reception. However, on Herkimer’s final drive, Aiello threw his fourth interception of the game to seal the defeat.
The Magicians were hoping to win the school’s first sectional title since 2013.
