New Hartford boys lacrosse opens postseason play with a nailbiter.

The Spartans held off Indian River 14-12 to advance in the Section III Class C playoffs.  New Hartford will face No. 1 Jamesville-Dewitt in the quarterfinals next on Saturday morning.

The Spartans got off to a blistering start by juming out to a 6-1 lead at the end of the first quarter.  They maintained that five-goal edge at the half thanks to an Aadam Mirza buzzer-beater.

Indian River made a late charge to close within two, but Gabe Cull’s nine-save effort was enough to send New Hardford through to the next round.

Mirza finished with a game-high five goals, and Shane Calhoun added three in the victory.

Elsewhere, VVS wins a thriller over Lowville 12-11 to earn a date with Skaneateles on Saturday.
