Wood Chip Plant Catches Fire in Sherrill

Fire broke out a wood chip plant in Sherrill early Monday afternoon – just steps away from the city’s power grid.

Shortly after 12:30 fire fighters were called to the Noble Wood Chip Plant at 104 East Seneca Street for a fully involved fire.  That’s the former site of the Oneida Silversmiths Factory.  The one story pole barn is well off the roadway, so firefighters used aerial ladders to spray water from above.   Eight local fire companies were called into action and were still being brought in two hours after the initial call.
Smoke from the blaze could be seen atop Smith Hill in Deerfield, about 25 miles away.
