An investigation into the recent death of a baby in Utica has resulted in the arrest of a Utica on the charge of Second Degree Murder. Jason Nieves, 20, of Utica, has been accused of causing the death of 7 month old Emelina Sanchez. First responders were called to a Walker Street address in the Cornhill Section of Utica around 6:00PM Saturday, January 20th. They found the baby with head injuries. She died early Sunday morning at a hospital in Syracuse.

Police contend that Nieves was babysitting Emelina on Saturday. Nieves is the boyfriend of the baby’s mother. While Nieves was babysitting, the child began to cry uncontrollable. As police explain, Nieves actions in response to Emelina crying caused the injuries to her head that resulted in her passing.

The death of Emelina Sanchez is the first homicide in the City of Utica this year.
