Update on Weekend Shooting in Utica

Utica

Utica Police have released new details surrounding the death of a 19-year-old man at Addison Miller Park over the weekend. Today, police released autopsy results for Jesse Lee Rose. Officials say that rose died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the stomach. The Utica Police Department tells Eyewitness News that Sunday’s shooting unfolded in a matter of minutes.

They say 19 year old Jesse Rose walked from the woods behind Addison Miller Park and fired 5 rounds. Police responded minutes after the shots were fired and Officer Anthony Ellis was the first on scene. According to police, officer Ellis asked rose several times to drop his weapon. They say as rose was turning his gun on himself, Officer Ellis fired two rounds. One missed, the other hit rose in the left hand. Utica Police Chief Mark Williams describes the situation as a life and death scenario.

Chief Williams says, “According to the witnesses and the officer they believe he was pointed the weapon at the officer and in a life and death situation you have a split second decision to protect your own life. And what we train our officers to do is to put down that threat.”

Chief Mark Williams says they are fully backing Officer Ellis and the actions he took. Police also say they found 3 notes on Jesse Rose indicating that he wanted to take his own life.
