UPDATE – Utica Woman Killed In Three Car Accident

A Utica woman was killed in a three car crash at the intersection of Route 5 and West German Street in Herkimer Wednesday. Karen Fuller, 48, was a front seat passenger in a car driven by her husband, 55 year old Scott Fuller. The Fuller’s car was hit broadside on as they made a left turn off Route 5 eastbound lane and on to West German Street. Backseat passenger, 21 year old Austin Fuller, suffered severe head trauma. Mrs. Fuller was pronounced dead at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Utica.

The New York State Police report that an eastbound vehicle, driven by 60 year old James Schulze of Ilion, was westbound on Route 5 and ran the red light at the intersection with West German Street. The Schulze car hit the Fuller vehicle on the passenger side.

Austin Fuller is in critical condition at St. Elizabeth Hospital. Scott Fuller suffered minor injuries. Mr. Schulze and a passenger in his car, 34 year old Jessica Groom, were also taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Utica with non-life threatening injuries.

A third vehicle was involved in the crash. An SUV driven by Faizi Chanje, 53 of Utica, was turning right onto Route 5 as the collision occurred. His vehicle was struck by the Fuller car and rolled through the intersection. Chanje was not injured.

New York State Police are continuing the investigation.
