A gas tanker truck rolled over Tuesday afternoon on an exit ramp off Route 12 South in New Hartford. Route 12, the North/South Arterial, is closed in the area of Route 8/840 in New Hartford. State Department of Transportation officials are urging drivers to avoid the area. They report it to be a Level 1 HazMat situation, which is the second lowest condition on the HazMat scale. There is no estimated time when traffic will be reopened. It could be hours.
The accident took place shortly after 1:30pm Tuesday afternoon. The Clifford Fuel company tractor trailer was exiting off Route 12 south up and on to Route 8 South. The truck rolled on to the driver side. Initial reports from the scene indicated that the truck driver exited the vehicle uninjured. It has not been released as to how much fuel was on board the tanker, but gas is known to be leaking.
Traffic has been blocked off on Route 12, in both directions, between Route 5A/5S (Seneca Turnpike) and Route 12B. Also closed is Route 8/840 from Commercial Drive to Genesee Street. It is expected that this area will be closed off for most of the evening. Alternative routes are recommended. Vehicles southbound on Route 12 are being diverted at Oswego Street in Utica.
The Oneida County HazMat control is being assisted by Utica and New Hartford Fire Departments. A Fire Foam truck from the Oneida County Airport was also called in. We will keep you posted throughout the evening and at Eyewitness News at 6PM on WUTR.
