Early on Friday, Utica Mayor Robert Palmieri announced that a Utica Police Sergeant had been suspended without pay for his actions last month while handling a call regarding a robbery. Later in the day, the Mayor’s office issued another statement regarding the reaction to the suspension by some members of the Utica Police force. According to the city, “some members of the Department abandoned their shift and several others called-in sick for future shifts.”
The statement notes that the Utica Police Benevolent Association had threatened that members of the force would take such an action if the City disclosed to the media the suspension. The Utica Police administration reached out to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office to ensure proper coverage and protection for the City of Utica.
The statement from the city is below.
