Travel Advisory issued for Route 5S over Steele Creek in Ilion


Village of Ilion, Herkimer County

ILION, N.Y. (WUTR-TV)– The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) Utica Regional Office has issued the following travel advisory for motorists in the Village of Ilion, Herkimer County:

Starting, Monday, April 19, through Friday, April 23, 2021 State Route 5S, through the Village of Ilion will be closed to through traffic in both directions in order to perform bridge maintenance operations over Steele Creek. In addition, the ramp from West Main Street to Route 5S eastbound in the Village of Ilion will also be closed for the duration of the operation.

Route 5S over Steele Creek is scheduled re-opened to traffic in both directions by 9 AM on Thursday, April 22, 2021. NYSDOT crews will be operating in the area to remove the detour and restore the highway to normal operating conditions.” Public Information Officer/Construction, James J. Piccola Jr.

Variable message signs have been in operation notifying local motorists of the road and ramp closures. Signed detours will be utilized to advise motorists of the road and ramp closure and direct traffic to the appropriate detour routes.

Motorists are urged to slow down and drive responsibly in work zones. Fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone.  Convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver license.
