TRAFFIC ALERT: Traffic pattern changes in North Utica

UTICA, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY-TV) – Herkimer Road and Van Rensselaer Road is a busy intersection which services a high volume of commercial, residential, and Utica Fire Department traffic.  The high traffic volume has attributed to traffic flow concerns.  In response to these concerns and the fact that the intersection is being resurfaced, there is an opportunity for change. The City of Utica has been working on a traffic plan to improve the traffic flow in this area. The City of Utica will be implementing temporary changes to the intersection on a trial basis to be re-evaluated in thirty days.

The following changes to the traffic pattern at the intersection of Herkimer Road and Van Rensselaer Road will be implemented (weather permitting) on Friday, July 9, 2021:

  • Upgrades to the traffic signal at the intersection of Herkimer Road and Van Rensselaer Road as well as the associated traffic signal at the intersection of Herkimer Road and Leland Avenue will be implemented to assist with continuous traffic flow
  • The traffic signal at the intersection of Herkimer Road and Van Rensselaer Road will be set to “flash”
  • Traffic entering the intersection from Van Rensselaer Road will be right turn only (signage will signify the change)
  • Traffic entering the intersection from Big Lots Shopping Plaza will be right turn only (signage will signify the change)
  • Traffic exiting the Burger King Lot onto Herkimer Road will be right turn only (signage will signify the change)
  • Traffic traveling eastbound on Herkimer Road will not be able to make a left turn onto Van Rensselaer Road (signage and road striping will signify the change)
  • Traffic traveling westbound on Herkimer Road will not be allowed to make a left turn into Big Lots Plaza (signage and road striping already existed for this restriction)
