The Delta Variant, as contagious as Chicken Pox

UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY)- The Delta Variant was first detected in India. this strand of Coronavirus is compared to being as contagious as Chicken Pox.

“Once you’re infected you can give it to multiple people, like three to four people compared to the original one that you can give to one to two people so that’s the reason it’s more contagious. ” -Dr. Suthanya Sornprom, Infectious Disease at Bassett Healthcare Network

The symptoms for the Delta Variant are less than COVID-19 symptoms. People are not losing their sense of taste and smell at the same capacity, “Typically, a common cold. You will feel fatigue, runny nose and the cough is less too.”

From current data the Moderna and Pfizer Vaccine are about 88 percent affective for this variant and Johnson & Johnson is about 60 percent. However per CDC recommendation, it is important to wear a mask even if you are fully vaccinated.

“Even if you are fully vaccinated, you could increase risk for having an asymptomatic infection and carry this variant to others. Those are not vaccinated will likely get the virus and become infected.”

Dr. Dornprom says being that is summer and more people are gathering is why there is a surge but getting vaccinated can help slow down the transmission.
