ALBANY, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – The deadline to file your New York State and federal taxes is fast approaching, and the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance is looking to help taxpayers find free services.

The department announced on Monday, March 27 that, along with the Free File Alliance, that there are several ways to file your taxes for free through the department. Taxpayers may qualify for free filing for any of the following reasons:

  • Your adjusted gross income was $41,000 or less, regardless of age,
  • Your income was $60,000 or less, if you are 57 years old or younger, or
  • You served as active-duty military, regardless of service and your income is less than $73,000.

To ensure you get the free filing, the department does urge that you go through their website to see if you qualify as well, at www.tax.ny.gov/pit/efile. If you do not qualify for the Free File software options, the Department does have other options, and you are asked to go to the department’s website to see them.

The deadline for filing both federal and state tax returns is Monday, April 18.
