Sharon Springs Hotel Collapses

Storms Bring Down Portion of Old Empire Hotel

SHARON SPRINGS–Strong storms brought down a portion of the former Empire Hotel–a structure sitting vacant for around 30 years.

Village Mayor Doug Plummer says around 3 1/4 of the building remains erect; the village will have to take the structure down, and municipal discussions how to do this are preliminary.

First built in 1927, the hotel also served as a school house.

Plummer says the building was part of a Schoharie County tax sale, and the person who won the building at auction decided not to take ownership after seeing the building’s decayed condition.
