UTICA, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – Three weeks after vandals destructed the community art center ‘Sculpture Space Inc’ of Utica on august 28th, Executive Director Tom Montan said that thanks to generous support from the community, they are gradually recovering from the disaster.
“We are humbled and honored to have so much support. It’s beyond our wildest expectations. So that allowed us to really get there very fast and if you look around you can see that we painted almost every single surface in the building including the floors and all of this was to gear up for our charity art auction which is coming up this Saturday,” he said.
The art center has put in new furniture and repainted floors. But thousands of documents that were thrown onto the floors have yet to be repaired. The art center expects to take a longer time to deal with these damages.
After the destruction, five children ages 8 to 11 have been arrested in connection to this vandalism.
‘Our goal is to urge our community urge our justice system and the police department to work with these kids in a reformative way. I don’t want to see them going to jail. I really don’t. So whatever we can do to restore justice for these young kids, I’d love to see that,’ he said.
Sculpture space announced via their Facebook page that this Saturday they are holding this year’s charity auction launch party as they take the creativity back for the first time after the destruction.
‘So we gonna have a huge crowd. It is going to be a lot of fun. It is gonna be the party of a century.’
