One Man In Hospital, Victims Identified

One man died and another is in Lewis County General Hospital after a boat sunk in the Stillwater Reservoir Wednesday afternoon. Town of Webb Police Chief R.W. Johnson reports that, just before 5:00PM Wednesday, a call was made to Herkimer County 911 regarding two people seen floating in the water about two to three miles from the boat launch at Stillwater Reservoir. The pair were picked up by another boater. When pulled from the water, one of the two was already dead.

Chief Johnson identified the deceased as Jerry Jennings, 69 years old, of Route 26 in Rome. The other person pulled from the water was Calvin Jennings, 67 years old of Canajoharie, the brother of the deceased. Calvin Jennings was suffering from hypothermia and taken to Lewis County General Hospital in Lowville. Police believe that the Jennings brothers had been in the water for 2 to 3 hours since the boat they were in sank.

Supporting the Town of Webb Police in the rescue efforts were Big Moose Fire and EMS, Lewis County Sheriff Dive Team, Lewis County Search & Rescue, NYS Forest Rangers and the Inlet Police. Also contributing to the effort were the Norridgewock Lodge Water Taxi and personnel from the Stillwater Hotel.

The Lewis County Sheriff’s Divers, along with State Forest Rangers and Town of Webb Police will search on Thursday to find the sunken vessel in order to determine what caused the boat to go down.
