After the village of Poland lost it’s firehouse in a devastating fire back in June- 55 of its members decided to plan a better future for the 5 towns they serve. Eyewitness news reporter Grace Fernandez brings us the latest in a community matters story. Construction for the new firehouse began last week, today they were already putting the roof on and the goal is to have it up and running by the end of October, middle of November. While a second fire station in the town of Ohio is in full operation they need something closer to home.”We needed something that was closer to this area to serve more of our people that station is 12 miles north so it cannot act as our main headquarters just for time response etc.,” said Fire Chief Scot Burritt. The new firehouse is being built in efforts to keep their trucks warm- a necessity the temporary facility cannot provide. “We have to vacate that by December 31st. It is not heated, it does not have a floor in it, there’s no insulation. There’s very limited electricity so it allows for very limited fire operations.” Burritt says it’s an understatement to say this has been devastating for the people, but with this comes the opportunity to build a better foundation- something future generations can build on. “This is not a, we put the building up and we’re done with it. This is going to be a 10 year– 20 year project,” said Burritt. The new firehouse sits on six acres of land, Burritt says its a modest building for now but it will give future generations the ability to expand and grow with the area’s needs. for now, they’re clinging to the community for help. ” We’re taking all kinds of donations if the public wants to help, that would be great. we’re currently gonna be soliciting our law makers, our politicians out there looking for grants, etc., ” said Burritt. Poland fire will be hosting a fundraiser this Sunday at the Poland Central School. As part of their annual fire prevention week campaign they’ll have a Chinese auction with chicken BBQ. The event will go on from noon to 5:00 PM.
