Otsego County elects new Board Chair

After coaching softball for several years, David Bliss knows what it’s like to work with a team.

“Working with kids, building relationships there and teamwork. Same kind of thing as building teamwork here at the county level with adults,” Bliss said.

Yesterday Bliss was elected as Otsego County Board Chair. He said his history of bipartisanship can benefit the board.

“I thought we should start a new direction, maybe be a little bit more congenial, more cooperative – we have a 7-7 split in the board this year,” he said.

Bliss said most board members have similar priorities as he does to help the county, but there are some issues he feels are important to focus on right now.

“We have a lot of rural areas that don’t have cell service and broadband access, and obviously we want to spread that. Our roads like all bridges and infrastructure in the state and throughout the nation are deteriorating so that’s a priority,”  he said. “And we need to build a relationship with our county employees and department heads and invest in not only our infrastructure but our personnel so we can move forward.”

Another big issue for Otsego County – consolidation.

“We use the County of Onondaga, we contract with them for their purchasing and that saved us a lot of money, and that’s something we want to continue to build on,” Bliss said. “We’re also working on new highway building sharing services with BOCES and some of the townships.”

Bliss said although services cost money, he’ll try to continue to find ways to save taxpayers some money. Ultimately he has two goals for his time as chair.

“Just increase economic and environmental protection for the county.”
