COOPERSTOWN, NY (WUTR)— The Otsego County Board of Representatives is thinking about changing the county’s form of government.

“Currently we have a board of representatives,” Otsego County Board Chairman, David Bliss stated. “There are 14 districts based on town lines.”

Some Otsego County residents feel as though a new form of government would be more beneficial.

“There are many people who feel as though we should move to having a full-time county manager,” said Bliss.

Currently, the county board members only hold part-time positions.

“County manager is kind of a generic term, but it could be elected or appointed,” Bliss explained. “County executive, county administrator, county president… the duties vary. So, it is going to take some time for us to sort through that to decide what is best for our county.”

Before a decision is made, the board will weigh the costs of having a full time position. But even with a new full time county leader, the Otsego County Board of Representatives would still have an important role.

“They would be more legislative oriented instead of overseeing daily operations,” Bliss explained.

There is no set time frame as to when a change could happen.
