One area organization is honoring the 150thanniversary of the American Civil War.

The Oneida County Historical Society is funding the CivilWar Memorial Project to commemorate the sesquicentennial year.

An 1861 Civil War era cannon will be displayed in thepavilion right outside the Historical Society’s building on Genesee Street.

The Executive Director says it is important to remember thesacrifices area soldiers made in the war.

“The Civil War was the biggest conflict ever in the North Americancontinent. Oneida County citizens played a significant role in that. It’s apartof our regions identity and it’s important to commemorate that in thesesquicentennial years,” said Brian Howard.

The cannon is currently being restored in Deansboro while MVCCstudents are lending a hand with building the pavilion.

The director says he hopes the memorial is finished before July.
