Oneida County COVID-19 Briefing: Lowest Positivity Rate Since Last Summer

News

ONEIDA COUNTY, N.Y. (WUTR-TV) — In today’s COVID briefing, Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente says the county’s positivity rate hasn’t been this low in nearly a year,

“Our positivity is is .8% which is below 1%. We have not seen numbers this well since last summertime.” – Anthony Picente, Oneida County Executive

Currently there are 33 new positives, 371 active cases and no new COVID-related deaths. Vaccine eligibility expanded earlier this week to everyone 16 years and older. Picente says now the issue isn’t about getting enough doses, it’s convincing younger residents to get vaccinated.

“Older more vulnerable people are getting vaccinated and protected, we need our younger people to now follow suit. And I’m specifically referring to really the 25 to 40 year old’s. Who seem to be a little more resistant to the vaccine.” – Anthony Picente, Oneida County Executive

More than 80,000 residents have received the first dose and 31.9% are fully vaccinated. At this rate, Picente says the county could reach heard immunity sooner than expected.

“If we continue to get doses, we continue to get people that are interested in them. Again looking to almost double that. You know i think we’re almost into the summer months of June.” – Anthony Picente, Oneida County Executive
