UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) — Utica Police are investigating a possible homicide stemming from an incident on Devereux Street on Thursday, September 21.
Officers responded to a domestic incident at 7 Devereux Street at approximately 3:05 pm, along with the Utica Fire Department. Upon arrival, the officers made contact with a male inside an apartment.
Police say they subsequently entered the apartment to find a deceased female in a bedroom within the apartment. The male was immediately taken into custody and transported to the Utica Police Department.
According to police, the incident is being treated as a homicide. The Major Crimes Unit has been assigned to investigate the incident.
This is an ongoing investigation, and details will be released as they become available.
UPDATE (9 AM, September 22) — According to Utica Police, the male — whose name has not been released at this time — has not been formally charged with a crime, but charges will be forthcoming. The Crime Scene Unit is still on the scene, conducting evidence collection and scene processing.
UPDATE (10:47 AM, September 22) — The man arrested in connection with the incident — 39-year-old Abraham Zlap of Utica — has been formally charged with second-degree murder in the death of the woman found in the bedroom of the apartment. The woman has been identified as 71-year-old Fakhrieh Abdelghani of Utica.
Police say that the full details will be released through the court process; however, preliminary findings reveal that the possible cause of death to be strangulation.
