One Of Two Missing Swimmers Found In Oneida Lake


Search Still On In South Bay Area

The body of a 62 year old man was pulled from the water in the western part on Oneida Lake Sunday afternoon. The search for another missing swimmer continued in the South Bay section of the lake.

The Onondaga County Sheriff Office reported that Richard Whitney is the man who drowned Saturday afternoon when he jumped from a boat to swim in the lake. Whitney never resurfaced. He was not wearing a life jacket and was said to have been pulled away from shore by the lake current. 

Another search was held Sunday afternoon on the eastern end of Oneida Lake, near Callahan’s Marina. The Sylvan Beach Fire Department reported that that search included divers and cadaver dogs. They are looking for a swimmer who went into the water off a boat Friday evening and did not return to the surface. 

Shortly before 4:00PM Sunday afternoon, there was another rescue call made for a child who went overboard near Billington Bay, which in the area of Bridgeport. The child was rescued and returned to the boat.
