UTICA, N.Y. (WUTR-TV) — Several months later, we’re still seeing the financial affects of the pandemic. That’s why some families are in need of extra help. Fortunately, New York State has program that helps pay for household heating bills.
“The HEAP program, or the home energy assistance program, is a federally funded program that assist low -income individuals with general heating costs.” – Michael Romano, Deputy Commissioner Of The Department Of Family And Community Services
The program is income-driven, so it goes by monthly income and the number of people in the household.
“There’s also a categorical eligibility, so individuals receiving temporary assistance or snap benefits are automatically eligible for HEAP benefits.” – Michael Romano, Deputy Commissioner Of The Department Of Family And Community Services
Open enrollment began last month, but residents can apply up until April 2021. The application process is simple and can be completed online.
“You can go to the Oneida County Family and Community Services website and it will bring you right to a link to my benefits so it’s an easy application online. Of course individuals can call for an application.” – Michael Romano, Deputy Commissioner Of The Department Of Family And Community Services
You must provide proper identification, proof of income and proof of resources for everyone in the household. For a full list of eligibility requirements visit the county’s website.
