(WUTR-TV) — In today’s society, it’s easy to get distracted and let your guard down. State police say many criminals are opportunists, and staying alert can deter someone from approaching you .

“Being on your cell phone will make you an appealing target to someone that is a bad guy just because they know that you may not be paying attention to what’s going on.” – Trooper Aga Dembinski, New York state Police, Troop C

You should also limit personal information shared on social media.

“You can flag yourself to somebody that wants to do wrong by constantly showing where you are and constantly checking in somewhere, because people know that where you are or know that you are not home.” – Trooper Aga Dembinski, New York state Police, Troop C

If you’re out at night it’s best to bring a buddy and pull out your keys before heading to the car.

“Have your keys ready to be able to just get right into your car and then lock your doors immediately. if you feel like there’s something suspicious, call 911.” – Trooper Aga Dembinski, New York state Police, Troop C

If you’re being threatened, do whatever you can to defend yourself.

“You can carry a whistle so that it grabs people’s attention. You are allowed to carry pepper spray or mace as long as it’s small enough to fit in your pocket and even some tasers, stun guns are now legal in New York state.” – Trooper Aga Dembinski, New York state Police, Troop C

Trooper Dembinska says there’s been a lot of car thefts in their region recently so be sure to keep your home and car doors locked.

“A lot of times those people aren’t going to break a window they’re going to use that opportunity to check a car door, pull on the door and see if it’s open and take whatever they can.” – Trooper Aga Dembinski, New York state Police, Troop C

Trooper Dembinska says to always call police if you’ve seen something suspicious and let someone know where you’re going and when you’ll be back.
