UTICA, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY-TV) – Maternal Child Services at the Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) is offering free monthly breastfeeding classes for expectant parents who have either chosen or are considering breastfeeding. The classes are taught by International Board Certified Breastfeeding Consultants (IBCLC) Anna Mroczek, BS, RN, IBCLC and Galina Karpova, RN, IBCLC.
“You know as a new mom you’re coming home and it’s sort of like learning a new language that you have never had to learn before. The normal newborn behavior, what are you looking for? What is normal, what is not normal. It is important for parents to be able to look and see what do they have to address and maybe call a doctor with and what is actual normal part of your physiology.”-Anna Mroczek, Breastfeeding Consultant
The two and half hour class also addresses the benefits of breastfeeding, moms returning to work to even picking the proper breast pump. And after the baby is born there is another class, Breastfeeding Cafe.
“Moms are able to build a community and meet together, have that social network where they can meet and spend time with other moms. Ask the questions, get breastfeeding support after they had the baby.”
The free prenatal breastfeeding classes will be held on the first Saturday of each month from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Allen-Calder Conference Rooms 3, 4 and 5 on the St. Luke’s Campus, 1656 Champlin Avenue, Utica. The classes will be offered on June 5, August 7, September 4, October 2, November 6 and December 4. Please note that there will be no class held in July.
The classes are designed to address common breastfeeding concerns including:
- Importance of breastfeeding for the optimal well-being of mother and baby
- Normal newborn behavior
- What to expect in the first few days
- Physiology of milk production
- Positioning and latch for optimal comfort
