MVHS in Need of Fabric Masks: How Can the Community help?

News

(WUTR-TV) — The Mohawk Valley Health System is actively preparing for a surge in patient volumes and is in need of personal protective equipment (PPE). They are asking the community to help make cloth masks that can be used for healthcare professionals in need.

To create a homemade mask you will need cotton fabric, elastic (or ribbon if elastic is unavailable), thread and a sewing machine.

If you need materials, JoAnn’s Fabrics, located at 120 Genesee Street, New Hartford, is offering free fabric mask-making supply kits. Orders can be made for curbside pick up Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 5 p.m. When you arrive at the store, call 315-733-4969 and say you would like a kit. The kit will have enough materials for ten masks. Once all ten masks are sewn, they can be brought back to JoAnn’s for distribution to MVHS. Then, a person may receive another kit of materials to create more masks.

One important note: when you call 315-733-4969, stay on the line past the recorded message to talk with someone at the store.

If you can’t get a kit at JoAnn’s, the following stores offer the materials needed for shipment to your home:

  • Michaels
  • Hobby Lobby
  • Walmart (curbside pickup is available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day but some Walmart locations are low on mask supplies).
