New York will require at the peak of this COVID-19 Pandemic, 140,000 hospital beds. Currently, New York has 53,000 beds. To help with this, the Department of Health required hospitals to submit a surge up plan for patients by 50 percent.
Mohawk Valley Health System (MVHS) announced today that their surge plan will include a 100 percent increase at their St. Luke’s campus and a 75 percent increase at their St. Elizabeth’s campus.
President and CEO of MVHS, Darlene Stromstad says that, “For St. Luke’s, we usually staff 173 beds and that can surge to 346 and at St. Elizabeth’s, 141 to 240. We are taking rooms that have been mothballed for years or used for offices to transition them into patient rooms…”
The surge is expected in 14 to 21 days.
