MVCC Cross Country- Unity in and Individual Sport

Leading up to a big race, a cross country coach’s job can get stressful. They need to balance a heavy workload with proper rest while mixing in strategy to ensure  the fastest times.

Gary Parker “Get them to the line on time. Because once they start racing there is not much I can do. It’s not like basketball where I can call a time out, or put in a substitute. You just try and get them prepared as well as you can and when the gun goes off let them race.”

When the runners take off it’s now up to the team to get it done. For the hawks their strategy always began with motivation. However, when race day comes around the focus will often switch. MVCC Head Coach Gary Parker explained, on that day he’s got one job before simply watching to see if the hard work paid off.

“Get them to the line on time” Parker said while holding back a smirk. “Because once they start racing there is not much I can do. It’s not like basketball where I can call a time out, or put in a substitute. You just try and get them prepared as well as you can and when the gun goes off let them race.”

When the runners take off it’s now up to the team to get it done. For the hawks their strategy always began with motivation.

“If you can get your team motivated they can do amazing things” explained Tyler Beattie. “The team we had this year was great and had a lot of guys who packed up. And when you pack up, it displace a lot of the other teams. And plus if you’re a tight knit group you can do things, you can motivate each other for even the littlest things.”

While every team has obstacles to overcome. Being there for one another was never an issue for MVCC.

“My favorite part about this year was just being part of a tight knit group of guys” were the words of freshman Alec Ambruso. “You know they have your back, and I love them.”

Tyler Unislawski added to the sentiment by comparing this team to his family, “Really I didn’t expect to have a group of brothers like we did. That’s what I call them at this point, a group of brothers.”

As brothers they took home second in the NJCAA National Championship. A feat they’ll remember forever,

“It’s kind of a cool thing to run at a national championship” stated Head Coach Gary Parker. “They all get medals, they all got hardware. We’ll talk about it forever.”

Not only were the Hawks able to achieve team success but they also watched teammate Zakaria Djouma win the NJCAA Championship, capping off an undefeated season.
