Get ready.. get set.. March For Babies! Tomorrow morning, The March of Dimes will celebrate a major event. Hundreds of Mohawk Valley residents will join together in raising awareness for premature birth – the most urgent infant health problem in the U.S. today.
For the Zink family in Ilion, these issues hit especially close to home. Just about 5 years ago, Tricia and Jerome Zink were excited to be having twin boys. But at 28 weeks, Tricia went into premature labor and that’s when their plans changed.
“It was scary and it was surprising and a lot of unanswered questions,” says Jerome Zink, father of premature twins.
“I was scared, scared to death, didn’t know what was gonna come of it,” says Tricia Zink, mother of premature twins.
On June 6th 2008, Tricia gave birth to Ryan and Mason; each boy weighed just about 2lbs, 5oz. And 18 days later, Ryan died from an infection.
“It’s very hard. It’s hard to watch Mason grow but in the back of my mind, its what about Ryan?” says Tricia.
“That’s why I do the March of Dimes. In honor of Mason, but in memory of Ryan,” says Tricia.
Tricia and Jerome say they march to raise awareness but its more than that. They want to make sure other families don’t experience the same heartache they went through.
“It’ll probably never go away but its always good to know that there’s people out there that will help get you through difficult times,” says Jerome.
And tomorrow, Tricia, Jerome, and Mason will become Team Ry-Guy, with a message for their son.
“We love him and we’re doing it for him,” says Jerome.
“I love you, miss you, but I have my Mason that I can carry on for,” says Tricia.
And if you want to join the Zink family along with hundreds of others, there’s still time to sign up. The March for Babies will kick off 11am tomorrow at Mohawk Valley Community College. Registration is at 10am.
