Coronavirus is a separate group of viruses from those that cause the flu. Coronavirus is more related to the virus that causes the common cold.

It’s name, Corona, means crown. When the virus is looked at under the electron microscope, it has small spikes around the spherical body of the virus. The spikes makes up the shape of a crown.

The outbreak started in Wuhan, China.

Professor of Biology at Utica College, Lawrence Aaronson, says these viruses normally reside in animals. The outbreak started in China, seafood market where there were wild animals. It is believed that the diseased animal came into contact with a human and now the virus has spread.

Coronavirus is prevalent in the United States because Americans traveled to China. Aaronson says the incubation period in unknown, ” It can be anywhere form four to eight days. So people can be asymptomatic but, still be contagious. So, for the general public health, it really is advisable for people who may have been exposed to be in some sort of containment or quarantine.”

Aaronson says people in New York should not panic, just make sure to wash your hands with soap and hot water.
