Independent Living Centers across the state launched a campaign to raise awareness of the need for New York State to transition away from nursing home placement and shift to a greater focus on independent living.
As we know, thousands of deaths have occurred in nursing homes, stemming from the pandemic. According to the New York Association of Independent Living, there’s been over 7,000 nursing home deaths. On average it costs Medicaid a little over $86,000 dollars per year to keep someone in a skilled nursing facility. The resource center for independent living (RCIL) is an active participant in the campaign to help keep people safe and save money.
