SOUTH UTICA, NY (WUTR-TV) — The future of New Forest Cemetery could be in flux. Comments from a social media post have many people wondering if the cemetery will be abandoned and if it’s too late for lot owners to save it.
Eyewitness News reached out to the representatives from the board. They say they have been facing a financial burden and they do not have enough hands to stay afloat. They are asking plot owners to step up to the plate and help keep the cemetery a place where people can visit their loved ones.
“We are in this position because we need to survive, to recreate a new board. In order to do that, the plot owners are going to have to decide individually whether what the cemetery holds to now, what’s dear enough for them to be willing to give their free time to help save it. Basically, we have reached that point where it is…will we save this?” says Debra Adamkowski, board member of New Forest Cemetery. “The re organizational meeting is going to give lot owners an opportunity to see the fact that yes we – we are here, but we’ve been holding on,” says Adamkowski.
The Emergency Lot Owners meeting will determine what is next for the cemetery. The meeting will be July 2nd, 2020, 5 p.m. at Hanna Park next to Utica City Hall. Anyone who attends must wear a mask. Lot owners and their descendants are urged to attend the meeting, they will be able to vote — either to re organize the cemetery or to abandon it. Representatives from the Division of Cemeteries and the City of Utica will be present to answer questions.
