UTICA, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – Utica Police have charged the man they believed to be involved in a shooting on Kemble Street on Tuesday, September 12.

Police were called to the 1400 block of Kemble Street at approximately 2:45 pm on Tuesday. Upon their arrival, they found a female victim suffering from a gunshot wound to her abdomen. She was immediately transported to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. According to the hospital staff, the victim’s injuries are serious, but non-life threatening, and she is expected to make a full recovery.

Police say that after officers arrived on the scene, they received information about a possible suspect. Investigators with the Warrants Unit conducted a stop of a vehicle matching the description off Herkimer Road in North Utica. The operator, 42-year-old Tyrrell Royster of Utica, was subsequently detained and transported – along with the vehicle — to the Utica Police Department.

A search warrant was executed on Royster’s vehicle, and police say that they allegedly located a loaded .40 caliber handgun.

At the conclusion of the investigation, Royster was charged with:

  • Second-degree Attempted Murder, a felony,
  • First-degree Criminal Use of a Firearm, a violent felony,
  • Second-degree Criminal Possession of a Weapon, a violent felony, and
  • Criminal Possession of a Firearm, a felony.

According to police, the circumstances of the shooting remain under investigation by the Major Crimes Unit.
