MOHAWK VALLEY, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – Earlier this year, the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties announced that they would be spearheading a day of giving event, exclusively for nonprofits serving the two counties.

As a way to mark the 70th anniversary year of the Community Foundation, the first online, 24-hour day of community giving, known as ‘Mohawk Valley Gives,’ is happening now, and is turning out to be a huge success.

“MV Gives is an online platform for a day of giving that is community-wide,” said Alicia Fernandez Dicks, President & CEO of the Community Foundation of Herkimer & Oneida Counties.

“The goal is to help everyone and make it easy for them to give to the causes, and to the programs that they love to support.”

This initiative has over 150 nonprofit organizations participating, across a variety of fields and services.

“The organizations span all sorts of different interests, and services, and programs for our community,” said Dicks. “So, there’s a lot to pick from, and there’s a lot of vitality in this day today.”

And so far, it’s proving to be a hit, as the total monetary donation total currently tops $400,000.

“We’re actually exceeding our expectations,” said Dicks. “We weren’t sure what to expect as far as donor engagement and dollars raised, but as of right now, a little over halfway through our day of giving – and you can give up until 11:59 PM – we’ve got almost 1,200 donors and over $304,000 raised for 122 organizations.”

Although the Mohawk Valley gives match and challenge incentives that end tonight at midnight, you can still donate to these organizations through the rest of the month.

And it looks like this event might also end up being an annual initiative.

“After today I think it’s looking like we might be doing this again and again,” said Dicks. “I’m sure the nonprofits will feel the same way, we try to make it easy for them to participate and build those partnerships – so it’s a great opportunity for everyone to give back.”
