NEWPORT, N.Y. (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – The Boralex Solar Farm will not only be located in the Town of Deerfield, but also the Town of Newport. Resident and landowner Richard Marko has allowed the company to lease a portion of his farmland, and he says me that this project is a blessing.

“Right now we currently feed approximately 30 families on our farm and it allows us to continue to do that,” said Richard Marko, Hillside Meadows Farm.

The supplement that the company gives in exchange for the land will give him the ability to fix his equipment and pay employees, and overall will keep his farm open.

“I’m looking forward to the day where I can call someone up and say hey come give me a hand because I can pay you today,” said Marko.

In the future, Marko says this land will return to farmland for his children and grandchildren.

“What is in our contract is they are going to remove panels and give us back open farmland that our families will be able to use in the future which is great,” said Marko.

The proposed project is still in the planning stages.

“It takes us over a year to just prepare the paperwork itself and during that process once their is an application we will be looking to maybe next year for the application to go in,” said Darren Suarez, Manager Public and Government Affairs for Boralex.

It will take another year for the office of renewable energy siting to go through the approval process. for now construction being fully completed in 2025.
