HERKIMER, NY (WUTR/WFXV/WPNY) – A walk-off loss ended the Herkimer Generals’ chance at an NJCAA Region III baseball title on Sunday. Two days later, the team learned they have another chance to defend their National Championship.
The seventh-ranked Generals lost their Region III championship game to Niagara County Community College, 6-5 on a walk-off sacrifice fly on Sunday, May 21. However, on Tuesday, May 23, the Generals found that they had received the at-large bid to the Division III World Series, which will get underway on Saturday, May 27 at Pioneer Park in Greenville, Tennessee.
It is the eighth appearance in the Division III World Series for Herkimer in the past 16 years.
They will start the tournament by facing the same team they beat to win their first-ever national championship: the Dallas College-Eastfield Harvester Bees, who come into the double-elimination tournament ranked number two in the nation with a 45-11 record. A win for the Generals could set up a Region III championship rematch with third-seeded Niagara County in the second round.
The Generals’ first round matchup against Dallas-Eastfield is scheduled for Saturday, May 27 at 12:45 PM. You can watch the live stream on the NJCAA website or follow the live scoring on the college’s website.
